Photo Essay

By Reesha Aspinall-Brown

For this photo essay I wanted to incorporate my interests into these pictures by capturing the environment and scenery of the night sky and the local theatre. This first picture featured above is the Kamloops city at night. A main element I wanted to focus on was capturing the clouds looming above the city and the city lights. The exposure is low, which allows the main focus to be on the lights and emphasize the shadow of the trees while successfully being able to view the blanket of clouds over the city.

This photo captures the bustling movie theatre on a Saturday night. A main theme in all my photos is having a visual film look. I added grain and turned down the exposure to create this effect that is pictured above. The low exposure highlights the shadows of the cars and various people entering the building. The main focus of this image is the bright theatre signs. The street post accompanies it well, the image is even with lighting that does not let the theatre stand alone surrounded by darkness. As well as, the street post assists in creating the scene of this image without taking away the main focus of the theatre.

I created a visual retro look with this particular picture. The exposure is low and has high grain to create the retro film effect, following the theme. The main focus of this picture is the light elements. The vivid menu as well as the popcorn and overhead ceiling lights is the main focus that captures attention. The mix of dark shadows being the roof and people with bright lights balances evenly throughout the image.

I was drawn to capture this particular bench with the three hanging posters above. The certain placement of objects makes this image look tidy and organized. The main focus are the three posters with the hanging lights above. The exposure is low to emphasize shadows but also bring attention to the lights. The contrast between the red and black shadows has a smooth transition as well.
This particular image is different compared to the other photos featured. The exposure is low with the full grain effect that has created a black and white image. With the exposure being very low it has created a seamless effect. The screen and walls aren’t distinguishable, which creates a seamless black shadow. Thus allows the main focus of the image to be the post credits of the movie. The photo was taken on a slight angle to draw more attention as the image is merely black and white.
